A Primer on StarGate Atlantis

Today, we cover the premise to StarGate Atlantis. If you haven't yet read Part I of our StarGate primer, you should read that first, as this continues the story started there. Tomorrow, we cover Battlestar Galactica.

StarGate Atlantis

The wise and noble race of Ancients who left our galaxy long ago, set their home on a planet called Atlantis in the Pegasus galaxy. From there, they spread knowledge, wisdom, and their own culture across the other planets. However, in that galaxy, they eventually came across an indigenous race of evil and uncivilized savages known as the Wraith.

The Wraith are a warrior race of dreadlocks-wearing tribes, whose members wear tribal tattoos and constantly have the munchies, almost as if drugs are part of their culture. Not nearly as advanced, but infinitely more ferocious and battle-ready, they eventually overcame and wiped out the all-powerful Ancients, who never understood such unbridled barbarism.

Fast-forward to the 21st Century. A group of intrepid earth explorers, now equipped with space-faring technology, has just discovered the Pegasus galaxy and Atlantis through a StarGate portal. However, it's too much energy for humanity to open the portal to Pegasus twice, and Pegasus is too far for spaceships to reach quickly. The few earthlings who initially travel to Pegasus, these pilgrims if you will, are effectively on their own in this new world.

They soon have a run-in with the Wraith, where they discover that everything about the Wraith is inhuman, involves savage tribal rituals and violent customs, and need to be destroyed. Although they're outnumbered and outgunned, the pilgrims have righteousness and superior technology on their side. Of course, that may not be enough, so the pilgrims seek help.

In exploring the New World, the pilgrims find some friendly locals. Primitive, lacking any technology, and wild in nature, these allies of the new world are often more of a liability than an asset. But thanks to the pilgrims' superior knowledge of science and civilized ways, the pilgrims protect the local wild ones at every turn anyway, even against their wiser nature, because the pilgrims need local guides.

Against insurmountable numbers and an insatiably brutal enemy, the pilgrims are still determined to defeat the savage aboriginals of this galaxy. Armed with sophisticated and thereby civilized weapons, useful locals, and a high morality that's on their side, the pilgrims may just have a chance to kill them all.

And no, we're not kidding, this is all the actual plot of the show.

Our primer continues tomorrow with Battlestar Galactica. Stay tuned!
